The Municipality seeks to appoint highly motivated and suitably qualified persons to the following positions:

The following vacancies exist within the CORPORATE SERVICES DEPARTMENT:

DISASTER MANAGEMENT PRACTITIONER: FIRE FIGHTING & RESCUE
Total Cost to Employer: R 344 852 pa


Reporting to the Manager: Disaster Management, the successful candidate will be responsible and accountable for the following, inter alia:
  • Assisting in the investigation of disaster related incidents and produce reports to the Manager
  • Assisting in the provision of input in the development of Municipality IDP's and in the development and updating of the disaster management plan
  • Assisting in ensuring availability and equitable distribution of resources
  • Creating awareness within communities and with individuals by providing information related to the disaster continuum
  • Assisting in the implementation of Departmental policy at the fire station where in command, to ensure orderly discharge of duties by subordinates
  • Supervising Leading Firemen in the discharge of their duties, to maintain and enhance efficiencies at the fire station
  • Assisting in the investigation of disaster related incidents and produce reports to the Manager
  • Assisting to maintain discipline standards at the station, and during operational/external exercises, participates in employee motivational protocols, prepares performance appraises
  • Assisting in control of, and responsibility for, the Station Area, and develop reporting systems to monitor the operational efficiency of the Station
  • Assisting in the maintenance of a central communication facility within the Disaster Management Centre to provide 24-hour communications to facilitate co-ordinated responses to incidents
  • Liaising with the Fire Prevention Associations regarding mutual co-operation, and implements operational commitments which arise regarding Fire Safety

  • Advising architects, engineers and building designers on technical matters related to the safety in buildings including smoke management systems, detection and alarm systems, structural fire protection, fire control and extinguishing systems to contribute to ensuring the protection of life and property against fire
  • Assisting in evaluating and approves proposals for the erection, alteration or modification of bulk depots handling, processing or storing flammable hazardous liquids or substances to contribute to ensuring the safety of the public from the risks posed by such installations or plants
  • Assisting in establishing questions and criteria for promotional assessments in respect of matters pertaining to fire safety to contribute to ensuring that staff achieve levels of competence commensurate with their responsibilities
Requirements:
  • A valid Grade 12 certificate
  • A Diploma in Fire Technology of the South African Emergency Services Institute or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the Authority
  • Computer Literate
  • A minimum of three (3) years experience within related environment of which (2) years shall have been served as a Fire Safety Officer or equivalent or higher post level recognised by the Authority Having Jurisdiction
  • Sound knowledge of local government-related legislation, regulations and policies
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • A valid clean code B drivers licence with PDP
