The 408 people in the KwaNzimakwe area, wards 10 and 11 whose houses were wrecked by Friday evening's
aggressive storm have been given temporary relief by Ugu District Municipality through its Disaster Centre.
The preliminary assessment has shown that amongst the 131 affected households, 21 were left completely destitute. Fortunately there were no fatalities. The Ugu Disaster Management Centre has provided temporary relief in the form of shelter, food parcels, blankets, mattresses, etc. "We requested the not so worse off neighbours to also assist by sheltering the most affected victims. It is also fortunate that roads and storm water drains, bridges and public facilities among other things were not damaged," said Mr Lindani Mzotho, the Acting Mayoralty and Communications Senior Manager. Members of the public are urged to show sympathy to the affected families by donating blankets, clothing, food, mattresses and other household necessities as some will have to start from scratch and build themselves new homes. |
