Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre unveiled and ready!

The entire Ugu community witnessed the grand opening of the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday, and confirmed Ugu District Municipality's state of preparedness in hosting the Algerian National Football Team during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The opening of this facility was presided over by the MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Ms Nomusa Dube, in the presence of the Ugu District Mayor, Cllr SB Cele together with all local Mayors of the family of municipalities in the District; Member of the National Parliament, Ms Ruth Bhengu members of the provincial legislature.

MEC Dube addressing a crowd of about 7000 people said this facility was developed for the benefit of the district and people should take pride in this facility and care for it. She added that it is important for the people of the district to show patronage to the initiatives done by government as they are done to better the lives of the people living in it.

In support of what was said by the MEC, Mayor Cele explained that it has indeed been a long road for Ugu to this point. He said the district prides itself for developing such a facility which will enhance our sporting prowess as a district, contribute to nation building, peace and stability for generations to come. "We plan to keep this facility alive and well marketed to the entire sporting fraternity, inclusive of all sports federations and association alike, locally and abroad. We will hopefully soon witness some PSL games brought closer to the people of Ugu as our facility is on par with the required standards," said Mayor Cele.

The Algeria national soccer team is scheduled to arrive in the district during the first week of June. Their training sessions will be at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre till their last game of the FIFA World Cup.
