Municipality Officially Unveils Disaster Centre

Ugu District Municipality in partnership with the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) will be officially unveiling the Ugu Disaster Management Centre to the public at its official opening on Saturday, 28 November 2015. The MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Ms Nomusa Dube- Ncube together with Ugu District mayor, Cllr Ntombifikile Gumede will be presiding at the official opening of the Disaster Management Centre which is situated along the R102 Marburg Extension 2.

The construction of this multimillion rand structure commenced at a sod turning ceremony held on 08 November 2013 following the proactive decision by KZN CoGTA as the custodian of disaster management in KwaZulu-Natal to fulfill its legislative and policy mandate through allocation of a budget to enhance District Disaster Management Centers in the province. The municipality also sought assistance from KZN CoGTA to build a fully-fledged disaster centre after it had fallen victim to the 2008 floods that left some parts of Ugu District in a ruin.

The UDMC was co-funded for R15.9 Million which includes the construction of phase 1; the Disaster Management block of offices and the external works and earthworks which are part of phase 2. The second phase of the center will be completed with the construction of the Council Chambers and phase 3 will be the Fire and Rescue Unit.

The Centre's expansion creates greater opportunities to fulfill the municipality's vision of having a fully-fledged disaster management center to fully service the local municipalities and have a bigger impact in the management of disasters in the district.

The construction of the disaster centre has also created temporary employment which partially responded to the district municipality's fight against the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality where 29 job opportunities were created.

Members of the public are cordially invited to be part of the opening ceremony of this multi-million rand Disaster Management Centre on Saturday the 28th of November 2015 situated along R102 Marburg Extension 2 with the event set to start at 09H00.

Ugu District Mmunicipality will continue to promote working together to create an environment that is friendly, responsive, accountable, effective and efficient for our communities.
